Word was received this morning of the death of James Begg, Gravel Hill, who, with his wife, were at Carlsbad Springs. No further particulars are to hand as yet. Mr. Begg was one of Roxborough's best known and most prosperous citizens, and his death will cause widespread sorrow among a more than usually wide circle of acquaintances.

Death of James Begg
Death came with shocking suddenness to a much respected and prominent citizen of Roxborough Township, Jas. Begg of Gravel Hill, who died last Friday morning at Carlsbad Springs, where he and Mrs. Begg were spending a few days. Mr. Begg was born in Roxborough township on August 10, 1841. On June 2, 1870, at Cornwall, he married Miss Lucy Campbell, also of Roxborough Township, and they moved to their farm at Gravel Hill, which at that time was covered with timber, and settled down to hew out a home for themselves. As a result of hard labor and untiring energy the farm is to-day among the best in the township and in a recent farm judging competition won for the owner a silver cup.
The deceased was for many years a member of the Counties' Council, representing Roxborough. Being one of the most highly respected citizens of the county, and one of its most reliable men, whose good judgment was proverbial, he held many other positions of public trust -- a Justice of the Peace for several years, an elder of the Presbyterian church of Gravel Hill, president of the Stormont Farmers' Institute, president of the Stormont Liberal Association and for 14 years representative at the Glengarry Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In politics he was one of the staunchest of Liberals. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Foresters.
Mr. Begg is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters -- Nelson and Stewart Begg, Gravel Hill; Angus Begg, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs.Geo. Norman, Gravel Hill; Mrs. E. A. McEwen and Mrs. H. S. McEwen, Warina, and Miss Muriel Begg, at home; 15 grand children; also by two brothers and four sisters -- A. V. Begg, Moose Creek; J. M. Begg, Avonmore; Mrs. W. Morley, Standish, Mich.; Mrs. D. Forbes, Dominionville, and Mrs. Robert Crawford, Gravel Hill.
The funeral service was held at the house on Sunday afternoon, August 6, by Rev.Geo Weir of Glencoe, a former pastor of Mr. Begg, assisted by Rev. S. D. McPhee of Avonmore and Mr. McCuaig, Gravel Hill. The text of the funeral sermon was John VI.68 -- "I go to the hills," etc. Interment took place at the Presbyterian cemetery in the Sixth Concession Roxborough.
The pall bearers were six nephews -- A. Crawford, A. K. Campbell, R. McIntosh, Wilbert Begg, Bergin Tinkess and Henry Grant.
Among the floral tributes were a pillow from the family and a spray from Mr. and Mrs. E. A. McEwen.

In the passing of Victor Begg on Sunday, May 18, this community loses one of its oldest and most highly respected residents, a man of many parts, who was a hearty supporter of every movement that had for its aim the betterment of humanity. Born on Jun 4, 1849, on the old Begg homestead, the lot just east of the home Mr. Begg built up for himself and family, he throughout his long life endeavored to set an example of integrity and industry to all. His interests were not confined to his own door, as he was a keen follower of the affairs of church and state, and gave freely of his time and money to the furtherance of any good cause. He was a staunch Presbyterian, and an elder of Knox Church, Moose Creek for forty years, in which he labored with all the ardor of an honest Scot, whose zeal and intelligence was far above the average. On February 14, 1872, he married Martha Blair, she passing away on October 6, 1924, and of this marriage was born four sons and four daughters, as follows, according to age - Wilbert, Cyril, Walter, Laura, (Mrs Boyd Johnston), Mary, Melvin, Nellie, (Mrs Murnie Empey), and Cecila. Of the above family three are deceased - Wilbert, Mary and Cecila. Cyril and Walter are interested in the firm of Charles Collins & Co., New York City; Laura is in the old Boyd Johnston home, Moose Creek; Nellie is at Finch, and Melvin on the homestead, where he is successfully carrying on the Ayrshire cattle breeding business, the foundation of which was so carefully built by his father. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Dr. McLean in the church, interment being made in Roxborough cemetery, a very large number of citizens being present to pay their last tribute of respect to a man who so long was identified with the life and welfare of the community. All that was noble in his life may we who come after endeavor to copy.

Mrs. Angus Grant
Mrs. Angus Grant, after a long illness, passed away on April 2. The funeral took place on Monday, April 5, to the Roxborough cemetery, and was very largely attended, as the deceased was widely known and very much respected in the community. The funeral service was conducted in the church at Moose Creek by Rev. K. MacLennan. The church was filled with people from far and near and the whole service was very affecting. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Grant and his family in their sore bereavement.
The late Mrs. Grant, whose maiden name was Eliza Eleanor Begg, was the youngest daughter of the late James Begg and Eliza Eleanor Begg of Roxborough. She was born in Roxborough 64 years ago, and was married to Angus Grant 43 years ago.
Mrs. Grant is survived by five sons and five daughters; also one brother, A. V. Begg of Moose Creek, and three sisters. Four brothers have passed away before her.
The late Mrs. Grant will be much missed in the community in which she had lived so long, and in the church of which she had been a faithful member. She was of a quiet, patient disposition, and took her sufferings in the Christian spirit. She died as she had lived, in the faith and hope of the Gospel, and she has gone, no doubt, to be forever with the Lord. May God comfort the bereaved family in the time of their great sorrow.

Mary's obit: "Mrs. John Aird dies after a long illness

Mrs. Aird, wife of John Aird, one of the pioneers of Plymouth county, died at her home, 1104 Madison street, at an early hour on Thursday morning. Mrs. Aird had been ill for the past eighteen months, suffering from pernicious anemia, and several times during that period her life had been despaired of, but she rallied. The end came suddenly. She had been feeling slightly better the past few days.
Yesterday morning, while sitting up in bed, her heart failed, and she passed away. She was a good woman, and her death is a distinct loss to the community in which she lived for more than forty-two years.
Mary Cameron was born June 27, 1854, at Athol, Stormont county, Ontario, Canada, just across the line from Glengarry county and the old Glengarry school, and to those who knew her intimately she had many an interesting story to tell of those early days in the Canadian wilds.
On October 16, 1873, she was married to John Aird, and came with him at once to Escanaba, Mich., where they remained until 1877. In September of 1877 they removed to Iowa, settling on the farm four miles east of LeMars, where they lived together for thirty-eight years. Here they wrestled with grasshoppers, drouth and inconveniences, and all the ups and downs of the pioneer days.
Five children were born to bless their union: Mrs. Charles Houston, now residing in Plainview, Neb.; John, Jr, who is located at Center, Neb.; William, of Orchard, IA., and Walter and Mary, of LeMars, the former occupying the farm home four miles east of the city, and Mary with her parents to cheer the last days of her mother's life. Ten grandchildren also are left to mourn her loss. Mrs. Aird leaves two sisters out of a family of six, Mrs. E.D. Parker, of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Ann McKercher, of Maxwell, Ontario, Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. Aird left the farm four years ago and since have resided at 1104 Madison street. Mrs. Aird was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church, and was one of those of whom it can truly be said that she was faithful even unto death. She was a loving mother, a good neighbor and a faithful friend. The inspired penman has drawn her portrait: 'The heart of her husband trusteth in her and her children rise up and call her blessed.' She passed away to her reward on Thursday morning, May 6, 1920, aged 65 years, 10 months and 9 days.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 2 o'clock from the house, and services will be conducted at the First Presbyterial church at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. H.V. Comin, pastor of the church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. A.Z. McGogney, an old friend of the family."

General Notes: Annie Begg came west from ON in 1882 with her family who settled in the Welwyn District (close to Moosamin on the Transcontinental Railroad). (This was the North West Territories at the time). Welwyn and Moosomin are about 10 miles apart. She married William Hamilton in 1887 who worked in McNaughton's store in Moosomin. Their two children were born in Moosomin, Maggie in 1888 and Maud in 1889. In 1891, they moved to Cannington Manor and ran the Mitre Hotel for a few years. From there they worked at the Beckton Ranch, where Billy did the farming for the ranch. (Cannington Manor was a village established in 1882 by formerly wealthy families from England who hoped to continue the same kind of lifestyle in Canada with much less money. The settlement was abandoned about 1900 when the railroad was not built through there but about ten miles south through Manor, Carlyle, etc.)
In 1904, they bought some land northeast of Manor and lived there until 1926 when they left the farm due to ill health and moved into Manor. Mr. Hamilton died in 1939 and Mrs. Hamilton in 1949. They kept the farm until their grandson Dacre Topp was old enough to take it over in 1938. He farmed and lived there until 1977 when he retired and moved into Manor, SK.

Annie married William R. Hamilton ²¹ in 1887. William was born in 1854 and died in 1939 at age 85.

It was with deep regret and sorrow this community learned of the death of Mrs. McLeod who passed away at her home near Thief River Falls Saturday evening. Mrs. McLeod was one of the first settlers of the Goodridge community together with Mr. McLeod and their sons Stuart and Victor they moved here in the spring of 1916 from their former home at Sleepy Eye and during their years of residence here they made many friends. Mrs. McLeod was a good neighbor and a true christian and will be missed by a large circle of friends as well as her immediate family. This community extends to the relatives their sympathy at this time.

General Notes: Christie and Walter Kirkconnell lived on lot 8, concession 1 of Bruce Twp. This farm was adjacent to the Begg farm. Walter died of tuberculosis when only 30 years of age. OBITUARY:
Pay Tribute To The Memory of Mrs. H. Campbell
AVONMORE -- An impressive tribute was paid the memory of Mrs. Hugh A. Campbell at her largely attended funeral held from the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lynden McBride, to St. James United Church. Mrs. Campbell, who passed away after an illness of three weeks in her 93rd year, had spent most of her long and useful life in this her native community.
The service was conducted by Rev. C. R. Sutherland, B.A., B.D., minister of St. James United Church, of which Mrs. Campbell was a member, assisted by Rev. David Gray, minister of the Lunenburg and Northfield United Churches.
Hymns sung were "Abide With Me" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Mrs. Eric Rawson and Mrs. Fred Barkley sang the beautiful "In the Garden." Mrs. Ross McMillan presided at t he console.
Pall bearers were Robert Campbell, George MacIntosh, Stewart MacRae, Harold Cameron, James Cameron and Calvin Grant.
Among the many relatives and friends attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. George Kuebler and Mrs. Maynard Campbell, Montreal; Frank Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hawn, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. McAteer, Cornwall.
The remains were placed in the vault at Paul's Hill cemetery, to await burial in the family plot in the spring.
Many beautiful floral tributes surrounded the casket, silent tributes to the memory of the deceased. The family received many messages of sympathy from friends both near and far.

Audrey Kuebler of Belleville, ON recalls her grandmother, Marjorie Campbell, as "a tiny lady with beautiful hair", who used to go to visit Audrey many times after Audrey was married. She stated that Marjorie lived her last years with Florence McBride in Northfield Stn., ON (now Lunenburg).
DEATH: Marjorie died at the home of her daughter Florence, in Northfield Station. This info from Audrey Kuebler, Norma Ferguson and Maynard Campbell. Actually Northfield Station is now called Lunenburg, ON.

Info from Maynard Campbell, Guelph, ON, 4 Oct 1993: Marjorie Grant and Hugh Campbell were married after Hugh arrived back in Avonmore after having worked for a time in the lumber camps in California. For a while they lived in Tiverton, Ontario. Later they bought the 100 acre farm #32 next to Hugh's father's farm. Another 25 acres was given to Hugh off the east side of the home farm. Hugh and Marjorie endured a lot of hardships but made a good living on the farm until 1928 when they leased the farm and moved to their house in Avonmore. They adopted Maynard in 1908 when his mother died, and were just like parents to him. Hugh died at his house in Avonmore in 1940 and Marjorie lived there until 1946 when she sold the farm and went to live with her daughter Florence who lived in Northfield, Ont. Marjorie died there in 1953.

Marjorie married Hugh Angus Campbell ⁴⁸ on 23 Apr 1878 in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario, Canada, son of Angus Campbell and Jane Rankin.
